Different kinds of flower bulbs, tubers and rhizomes

We offer a wide range of flower bulbs, tubers and rhizomes. These include the classic favourites Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths. But also striking Alliums, Dahlias and Lilies. Depending on which variety you plant, the flowers bloom in spring or summer.

Spring bulbs

Well-known spring-flowering bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths can be ordered from the spring for delivery in the autumn. You can plant the spring-flowering bulbs in the autumn, before the first frost. These bulbs need the cold of the winter under the ground. This is a kind of hibernation in which the flowers develop. After feeling the first warmth of spring the bulbs awaken and grow into beautiful flowers. Spring bulbs bloom in the spring. But the first spring-flowering bulbs such as Galanthus (snowdrops), Eranthis (blue grapes) and Crocus (crocuses) can even sprout in January. These flowers are a delicious appetiser for the bees, as they are among the first to bloom. The bees fly out for the first time around this time to look for pollen. Do you want to give the bee population a helping hand? Then it is advisable to plant early spring flowers!

Summer bulbs

Summer-flowering bulbs such as Dahlias, Begonias and Gladioli can be ordered online from the autumn onwards and delivered in the spring. You can plant the summer-flowering bulbs in the spring after the frost and they will flower in the summer, sometimes well into the autumn! Do you want to get the most out of your summer flowering bulbs? Make sure that you remove the spent flowers so that the plant has room to grow and new buds emerge.

Perennial naturalising bulbs and native plants

Naturalising bulbs are winter-hardy flower bulbs that come back every year and multiply. The optimum growing and flowering environment for naturalising bulbs is a place where they can be left alone. Galanthus (snowdrops) and daffodils, for example, flourish well under trees or shrubs. Naturalising bulbs such as Crocus and Scilla (Bluebells) can also be planted in the lawn, while the botanical little tulips prefer a spot in the sun. Are you going to plant the flower bulbs in the lawn? If so, it is advisable to ensure that the grass is not mown until the naturalising bulbs have finished flowering. That is approximately 6 weeks after flowering. Depending on the type and time of flowering, this means that mowing can be done from May or June. Some naturalising bulbs are also referred to as 'native plants' or stinzenplants. This refers to a group of historical species that were planted on country estates in Holland in the past. Native bulbs include the species Anemone nemorosa, Chionodoxa (Glory of the snow), Corydalis solida and Fritillaria meleagris.

Perennials

Perhaps the greatest advantage of perennials is that they provide greenery in your garden. But they also provide colour and structure in the garden. As a ground cover or as a background in a border, perennials are the perfect addition to your garden and are often used as a foundation. Perennials are hardy plants. They finish flower above soil in the winter and retreat underground for a so-called hibernation. In spring, these perennials sprout again. Under the right conditions, perennials grow richer and more beautiful every year. Do you have a shady garden or a garden where the sun shines all day? There is a suitable plant for every spot in the garden or border.

Planting and caring for flower bulbs

Unpack the flower bulbs and tubers as soon as they arrive and plant them as soon as possible after delivery. Can't plant them right away? Then store the flower bulbs and tubers in a cool (12-17 degrees), dry and dark place with good ventilation. Do not store in the refrigerator or in plastic, the flower bulbs must be able to breathe. Provide a healthy, well-drained soil. For planting instructions, we generally stick to planting distance 3x the width of the bulb and also 3x the height of the bulb. The bulbs and tubers can be planted in the soil by hand. It is helpful to use a bulb-planter for this.

Planting flower bulbs in the garden

There are many possibilities with flower bulbs. In a more formal garden design, you can plant the flower bulbs by colour in groups. A colourful collection of scents and colours can be achieved by planting a mixture of different varieties and colours. Mix different flower bulbs in a bucket and scatter them around the border. Plant the bulb in the ground where it will end up. This creates a natural and playful effect! Flower bulbs are perfect for combining with perennials. Spring-flowering bulbs bring already colour to the garden when the perennials have only just emerged from the ground.

Planting flower bulbs in containers

Planting flower bulbs in containers is the ultimate way to brighten up your patio or balcony. Make sure you use a large container, pot or basket with a hole in the bottom so that the flower bulbs can root properly and any excess water can drain away. Place hydro grains or potsherds at the bottom of the container to ensure proper drainage. The flowering period can be extended by planting the flower bulbs in layers. We call this lasagne planting. With a flower-bulb lasagne, you can create your own spring garden in no time! The bottom layer consists of bulbs that flower last, such as Tulips. Bulbs that flower earlier, such as Hyacinths and Daffodils, can be placed above them. The top layer is made up of early-flowering bulbs such as Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) or Crocus (crocuses). Flower bulbs can be placed one above the other without any problems. They flower as usual, one after the other, but in the same place. In this way you can keep a container or patch in bloom for weeks!
